I thought I'ld pass along a tip or actually my version of prepping a reef tank before going on vacation.
Our 2 tanks normally have screen lids on them and each evaporates approx 1 to 1.5 gallons a day. So before we go on our vacation, 2 weeks prior I put on the factory glass lids as an experiment to see what the effects would be on temps, PH and evaporation. The only thing that changed is my evaporation dropped to half gallon per day. Temps remained the same and PH was .14 higher in both tanks. (Both have good skimmers)
So before we leave I top off both ATO jugs, clean both Auto Top off units sensors and clean both skimmers and skimmer "catches". (Both of our tanks have a 1/2 gallon skimmer catch bin equipped with a float valve as to not overflow the catch bin)
I also have cameras focused on both sumps so I can monitor skimmers and levels while we are away. I also have an Apex Classic system to monitor both of my tanks so in case I see something not quite right I can turn off things or make changes. And last but not least I have a friend stop by to check on the place.
I hope this info was helpful.
